Although some people may find the following tips funny, it is important to keep in mind that a DUI is a serious thing. It is not something to laugh or joke about. Your DUI attorney can defend you, but if you do not take your own case seriously, the judge may enforce a harder punishment than you were hoping to get.

Do Not Skip Out of Appearing in Court

Making an effort to appear in court shows that you have some remorse with regards to your DUI. Even though you have legal representation, this is not the time or place to blow off an appearance. It shows disrespect to your attorney as well as the judge and the court. It also clearly shows that you feel you are guilty and deserving of the punishment you are trying to avoid. In short, show up to your DUI hearing or accept responsibility for your actions and the punishment the court gives you, period.

Do NOT Show up Drunk or Under the Influence

Showing up drunk or under the influence of drugs definitely does not help your case in the least. Proclaiming you are an alcoholic with a problem will not get the judge to go easy on you because you have a treatable disease. It also will not get the judge to sentence you to rehab, if that is what you think will happen. Instead, your attorney will not be able to properly defend you and the judge will probably decide that you need a harsher sentence to teach you a lesson. If you also partake of illegal drugs, do not show up to court higher than a kite because you will have even more issues with the judge than you do already.

Do Not Show up to Court Filthy

If you wear dirty clothes, reek of alcohol and/or vomit, and have a greasy, unkempt appearance, it appears as though you just do not care what happens in your case. Whatever money you or someone else paid for your lawyer could just as easily been tossed in the trash when you make a physical statement like this. You want to appear as clean-cut and law-abiding as possible if you hope to get out of your DUI, or at least get a lighter sentence.

Follow Your Lawyer's Advice to the Letter

Your DUI attorney will have a lot of information and advice to give you in order to properly defend you and assist you with your case. It is important that you take note of what he or she says. Pay attention to all of it and follow it closely.
